JOHNE RICHARDSON BIO/ARTIST STATEMENT

Johne Richardson was born and raised in Kansas, and grew up with a fierce love of cowboys, history, the American West, the prairie, big skies, and wide-open spaces. He began drawing and painting at a very young age, and is working hard at it, still. After decades as a successful illustrator, and painting in watercolor for more than thirty years, Johne began to focus specifically on fine art, and transitioning to larger works on canvas- first with acrylic, and now exclusively in oil. Johne can generally be found out roaming the prairie, wandering in the mountains, or hanging out in his studio, painting landscapes and cowboys.

“I tend to chase the light, and for myself as an artist there is no better light than evening, just at sunset, and even better if there’s a storm just passed. I love the distant blue & purple of mountain ranges, and how the color changes with distance and time of day. The light is alive and always changing.

I work hard to simplify the complexity of a subject, to tell a compelling story with large, graphic shapes, a lively surface, color that speaks, is affectionate towards the light, and with a dynamic composition that is always attempting to break free of the boundaries of canvas. And at the same time, I’m attempting to capture an intensely personal, and fleeting, moment or mood. To me, landscapes are portraits as well, with the presence of life, if not a literal part of the image, very much implied.”

Johne lives and works in Overland Park, Kansas, with his wife Janet. They have three grown children.
