Artist's Statement
Several years ago I read a book entitled “West of Hell’s Fringe”. It detailed the lawlessness that accompanied the settling of the Oklahoma territory. It was an area where no towns existed one day and then the following day (after the land was given away to ‘First come first serve’) found towns of ten to fifteen thousand springing up. The law or any type of governing body to maintain order could not keep up. There was a rough element of men who found easy pickin’s on those who assumed that the mannered society of the east would just naturally fall in place out in the wilds of the west.
In this piece, I depict a couple of outlaws who have just robbed a bank. They came out to get on their horses and as they tried to mount…a group of vigilantes opened up on them with a hail of bullets. One of the horses spooks and jumps left – up and over the horse next to him.
